There are currently 100,000 vacancies in the UK's National Health Service. To look after a population of over 67 million, the NHS relies on 1.26 million staff, 140,000 doctors and 350,000 nurses. As Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Stephen Berkeley publish a new NHS Workforce Long Term Plan, you might think the NHS wants to secure as many UK-trained, experienced doctors and nurses as possible.
Dr David Cartland is a highly qualified General Practitioner (GP) living in Cornwall on the south-western edge of England. A GP is a senior medical doctor, equivalent to consultant level in hospital medicine. Dr Cartland founded his medical profession in the West Midlands, England. He graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 2008, qualifying as a Postgraduate Entry Doctor. In 2004 he gained a First Class Honours Degree in Biomedical Sciences, studying Immunology, Virology, Microbiology and Medical Statistics. He then Angiogenesis as part of the Birmingham Angiogenesis Research Group.
It is over a year since Dr David Cartland was first interviewed publicly in the UK column. NHS in crisisSome 18 months later, UK Column nursing correspondent Debi Evans caught up with him to find out what life is like inside the NHS. Cartland is at the pinnacle of his career, with many years of dedicated healthcare ahead of him. He has everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking out. How are NHS whistleblowers treated? British Medical Association Did you treat him? British Medical Association Did you take care of him?
David Cartland is married and a father of four, and is not only a doctor, but also a Christian, a family man and an avid supporter of the Aston Villa football team. As a doctor, he takes his responsibilities very seriously and remembers the day he graduated and took the Hippocratic Oath, which read: Primum non nocereFirst, do no harm. Caring for patients and being involved in their lives, even in small ways, is an honor and a privilege, and a responsibility that should never be taken lightly. No one becomes a doctor or a nurse for praise, gratitude, or financial reward. The motivation is simple: to care for sick people.
At the beginning ofPandemic', medical professionals were in shock and within the NHS the confusion, fear and uncertainty of what was to come was palpable. Who had ever seen a pandemic looming before? No one knew what to expect and so most doctors accepted what the “science” seemed to be telling them. Despite having serious concerns about the timing of the rollout of a brand new new “vaccine” with little to no safety data, David Cartland rolled up his sleeves and did as he was asked.
After losing his best friend to the “pandemic,” the decision to get the shot was an easy one for Cartland. What doctor wouldn't get the shot to protect their patients? But has common sense been lost? Are our doctors “blinded to the light”? As stories began to circulate about the impending mandatory vaccination of healthcare workers in the UK, Cartland became increasingly worried. How many of his colleagues were being forced to get shots they didn't need? How many would suffer as a result? How many jobs would be lost?
David Cartland questioned his colleagues and superiors about everything, but he soon found the silence to be deafening. Not content with the silence, as a seasoned researcher he resolved to investigate further and find answers to his questions. The more he investigated, the more he discovered. Not keeping his findings to himself, Cartland soon found his views and findings obscured and antagonized by those around him. Feeling increasingly isolated, Cartland found himself at the centre of a firestorm of criticism from his colleagues and his professional body, the British Medical Association.
The vow to “do no harm” that had always lit up David Cartland's soul was suddenly ignited. It was essential that he uphold his vow and do what was in the best interests of the patient, not the NHS or the government. He constantly tried to engage in dialogue with colleagues and peer groups about his concerns about what he was seeing, but was repeatedly stonewalled and ignored. He reluctantly voiced his concerns on social media, but was often met with abuse, accusations and trolling, with attempts to shut him down both verbally and by preventing him from practising as a doctor.
Despite volunteering to receive two shots in his upper arm instead of one, Kirtland was quickly labeled an anti-vaxxer. MHRA Yellow Card DataIn 2016, he further confirmed that COVID-19 shots were causing a significant increase in serious side effects. But again, he was accused of exaggerating and rebuked by his own experts. How does he, who himself has suffered from vaccine injury, deal with the influx of information about the lack of safety data and the secrecy surrounding vaccine ingredients?
For the past three years, David Cartland has been speaking out. He refused to be silent, but it has come at a heavy price. He explains how he has pushed himself to provide for his young family while struggling to find permanent work as a general practitioner in the UK. Has he been forced out of his beloved NHS? Where, how and when will the witch hunt end? What will primary healthcare look like in the UK in July 2023? How safe will the NHS be? Will GPs still exist in 10 years' time?
In a revealingly candid conversation with Debi Evans, Dr. David Cartland, a kind, compassionate doctor who refuses to be silent, addresses some key issues: Does the COVID-19 shot shed the virus? Are we seeing an increase in patients with mental health issues? What's surprising is that we're hearing about a number of young men struggling to start a family. Why is that?
Please support David Cartland in any way you can. Not many young doctors with families to support would give it all up to follow their mantra of “do no harm”. If you are a young doctor and what you have witnessed keeps you up at night, please get in touch. The UK column provides a safe place to connect with others, even anonymously. We need more Dr David Cartland's.
