In our new podcast, we explore the lost internet favorite song “Ulterior Motives,” popularly known on the internet as “Everyone Knows That.”
For years, internet sleuths have tried to find where this song came from and the full version. Earlier this year, the song was discovered in an '80s porno.
Hosted by Josh Chapdelaine, CEO of Lost Media and Associate Director of the Masters in Media Studies program at Queens College, CUNY, “Everyone Knows That: The Search for Ulterior Motives” asks how the song was discovered and how it was created.
Through research and interviews across five episodes, Chapdelaine unravels this strange and delightful tale.
In 2021, anonymous user Carl92 uploaded a 17-second sample of the song that changed lost media forever. Its catchy tune was familiar to many, but for years, no one could find it.
“Everyone Knows That: The Search for Ulterior Motives” explores the history of the song, the theories pursued, the hoaxes created, and the song's shocking discoveries.
People interviewed throughout the miniseries include Kyle Gordon (comedian and musician), Violet Skye (musician and media archivist), Grafton Tanner (author and educator), Jordan Ramsay (creator), Julian Gray (musician and designer), Reed Berkowitz (award-winning game designer), Adam Boumas (journalist), Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth.
