IT has changed a lot since the 1950s, but some organisations still rely on old analogue technology. What does a safe transition to digital look like when the UK can't function without you?
That was the question faced by Sarah Milton-Hunt, chief information officer at National Grid, the company that distributes electricity and gas across the UK, when she began thinking about how to bring the company into the 21st century.
I spoke to Sarah in the latest episode of Computing's IT leadership podcast Ctrl Alt Lead about how the grid still relies on nearly 70-year-old technology, and how she and her team must make the system future-proof again as the energy sector transitions to renewables.
“The scale of what we need to do to address the energy transition means we can't just do things more efficiently. A fundamental transformation is needed to achieve this, and digital is key to that transformation.”
We also discussed the challenges that modern IT poses for today's grid and practical steps that all IT leaders can take.
