Over 300 people from the independent podcast community gathered in London last night for the Independent Podcast Awards 2024.
Held at King's Place and hosted by Chiny Ukata and Astrid Madimba, It's a Continent was named overall independent podcast of the year after winning the Best History and Best Education: World, Business and Finance Podcast categories.
The award was launched in 2023 by whynow Media and Verbal Diorama to celebrate independent podcasts that are not funded by a major brand or fronted by a celebrity.
With a total of 28 categories, It's A Continent was the standout of the night, winning two categories and the overall Independent Podcast of the Year title.
101 Part Time Jobs with Giles Bidder won trophies for Best Music Podcast and Best Jingle. Apocalypse Players retained the title of Best Gaming Podcast.
Book Review Podcast: For Kids By Kids was headlined by the night's youngest winner. 10-year-old Krishna Murali won the Best Education 'Children and Youth' category for his podcast that encourages his peers to get off their devices and read books.
Wrestling with the Champ won for Best Sports Podcast and host Ant McGinley probably got the best support on stage as he took off his shirt in true wrestler style!
The judges said of It's a Continent: “African countries, culture and history are underrepresented in British education, so this podcast is a must-listen.
“It gets interesting quickly, and the hosts are engaging and fun, easily mixing humor and wit with the serious nature of some of the topics they talk about.
“Each episode was engaging and well-researched, presented in a relaxed, casual style, and all done by the hosts themselves. Deserves the title of Independent Podcast of the Year.” It’s a true indie show.”
The show, in collaboration with the Spotify team, will see its name appear on billboards in Leicester Square and East London from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th October.
Winners will also receive a range of additional benefits from our sponsors Acast, Adelicious, Advertising Week, AudioUK, Captivate, Kings Place, Pod Bible, Podnews, Podknows Podcasting, the Podcasting, Seriously Fund, Rusty Quill and Spotify.
Apple and Spotify have both created playlists for winners on their platforms.
A complete list of winners can be found on the Independent Podcast Awards website.
