The second series of our Hackney and Newham History Social podcast has been launched.
The documentary series, produced by Immediate Theatre, is hosted by actor and broadcaster Sue Elliott-Nicholls. We create a collection of music, sounds and human stories that capture the essence of East London.
Building on the success of the first series, which explored Hackney and Newham from the 1960s to the 1990s, this new season takes a closer look at the connections between past and present.
Focusing on businesses and families, it emphasizes the resilience and creativity that characterizes this region, while also highlighting pressing contemporary issues such as fragmented communities, gentrification, and a cost-of-living crisis that is forcing family-owned businesses to close their doors. address the challenges of
Sue Elliott-Nicholls said: 'East London has been my home since the 80s and when I started acting in my 20s I worked in local pubs and cafes. But it wasn't until this podcast that I really started paying attention to the history close to home.
“I'm often asked about gentrification and my answer is simple: Areas change, especially in London. Pay attention to what was here before you came here.”
Funded in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hackney and Newham Archives, this podcast was originally conceived to preserve first-hand records of the borough's communities.
From the first recordings, it was clear that Sue and the team were on to something special, so the decision was made to develop the captured audio into a podcast format.
Now in their second season, they've been nominated for awards and have reached over 50,000 people, creating intimate and heartfelt stories like secret weddings, cherished family recipes, secret savings clubs, and local shelters.
