What we are spending is a weekly series exploring people's economic habits from a wide range of backgrounds and economic rankings, via audio diaries and interviews.
Hosted by award-winning writer and senior producers of Order Pineapple Street Studio Courtney Harrell, the series opens life with people across the financial spectrum and those who have opened their wallets, telling listeners everything, telling them what they want to do, what they want to spend for a week.
In an interview at the same time, guests discuss everything during the week of spending that they grew up for them.
Guests include Kelly, a Med Spa Director, trapped in student loan debt. Michael, a teacher and single dad raises twins. Jay, a professor of religion studies, is a parent and worries about the costs of raising a child. Cherry is concerned about her retirement plans, a recently retired social worker. Maxine, a long-distance truck driver who can no longer afford her home. And after the end of the Broadway show, actress Olivia navigates the uncertainty of life.
Maddy Spring Keeser, head of the original podcast, said: “As we continue to expand our powerful original slate, we are excited to launch this narratively driven personal financial podcast that will meet the demands of both top advertisers and listeners.
“What we spend, affects everyone, but somehow touches on subjects that are considered taboo. With very personal, often interesting, and sometimes heartbreaking stories from real people around the country, this show offers an engaging view of our relationship with money.”
The first episode of what we are spending is now available. All podcast platforms have new episodes released every week on Wednesdays.
