The indie audio-fiction comedy series Happy Medium: The Adventures of Melandoly Helen Polly enveloped the first season when the finale was released.
Created by Jay Hazen and JHP Fiction, the show follows Helen Polly. Helen Polly is a nomadic medium of autistic people with unusual ability to see and interact with spirit.
After discovering that cannabis can temporarily calm the chaos of the afterlife, Helen departs across the country in purple Squaley, with two strange companions.
In season one, Helen lands in Memphis, Tennessee, where she is drawn into a suspicious death incident.
When time runs out, Helen must solve the mystery, help her restless mind move on, and face the secret she is running.
The series has built a faithful following for a genre blending mix of comedy, mystery and supernatural adventure. All of this is told through the lens of Neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ storytelling.
The season finale has more revelation and emotional payoffs than before, and there could be more for the troubled Helen.
“A cast of extremely talented voice actors working on this story has been one of the great joys of my life,” says series creator Jay Hazen.
Jay Hazen, a disabled US military veteran and cancer survivor, is a writer, narrator and voice actor. He draws inspiration from his 13 years of work, including two combat tours, and his resilience in overcoming life's challenges.
As audio fiction experiences a creative revival, Happy Media represents the growing movement of independent creators to use media to tell original stories without the need for large-scale budgets or studio backing.
