Podmasters has launched a new podcast, Crime Scene, hosted by former Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan Howe and former Miller editor Alison Phillips.
Each week, two hosts with decades of experience in criminal investigations go in depth about the key cases and how they were resolved.
The pair sits down to look into real cases, from gang hits to manhunts, fraud, tortoises and drug trafficking, and find out what's really going on.
How will the police begin an investigation? What happens when they face a wall of silence from a witness that may be threatened, or when they get caught up in it? How do Covert Intelligence, Profiling, and Forensics come together to guide the perpetrators to justice? And when it all reached the court – did media coverage in the main cases hit the right place between information, sensationalism, and fear?
London crime fell by 18% as Bernard Hogan Howe oversaw a critical terrorist threat, telephone hacking scandal and Olympics as well as police responses to the worst riots in modern British history.
“In the police department for nearly 40 years, I have seen many terrible and amazing things. I've always believed in fighting crime and keeping people safe. I look forward to sharing my insights and details from the profession I loved,” he says.
Journalist Alison Phillips edited Miller from 2018 to 2024, becoming the first female editor since her first editor in 1903. In the newspaper, she won a 10-year scoop by exposing Dominic Cummings' trip to Bernard Castle during lockdown. She is a regular commentator for BBC1's Politics Live and ITV is this morning.
“Crime is endlessly appealing to the general public and a huge part of the media we consume,” she says. “Opensions want to understand more about the causes of certain crimes and what's actually happening behind the scenes. They're excited to work with Bernard to help listeners get that insight, understanding and track inside.”
New Crime Scene Episodes – Bernard Hogan Howe and Allison Phillips are released every Thursday on most podcast platforms.
