Sir Lenny Henry has put together a Philadelphia Soul playlist for BBC Sounds featuring some of his favorite Philadelphia soul songs.
In it, he talks about how important music was to him as a child, and how it has influenced his life and career in clubs, on the radio, and in shaping his record collection. I'm talking.
This special playlist will accompany Sir Lenny's special concert 'The Sound of Philadelphia' on BBC Radio 2 from 8pm on Sunday 27th October. The concert was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in October this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of black-owned soul music label Philadelphia International Records.
Featuring funk influences and rich string and horn arrangements, Philly soul laid the foundation for the emergence of disco in the late 1970s.
The label's members include The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, and Ain't No Stoppin' Us. Their hit songs include Now, Don't Leave Me This Way, and Love Train. , me and Mrs. Jones, and when can we meet?
Sir Lenny's playlist on BBC Sounds includes music from People's Choice, Archie Bell & The Drells, Billy Paul, The Jones Girls and more. He also delved into his record collection in the second show, “Lenny Henry's Lifetime Anthem Playlist,” featuring songs by Prince, DJ Cool, Beverly Knight, Eddie Kendricks, Soul II Soul, and more. I've selected some songs and artists that have become the soundtrack of my life.
Music was a huge part of Lenny's upbringing, and on the show he tells amazing stories about meeting his idols Prince and George Clinton, and singing at his 60th birthday party with Beverly Knight. Talk about friendship.
Both playlists will be available on BBC Sounds from Thursday 17th October.
