Hidden Histories is a new six-episode podcast series that shines in the lives of black women who are respected as unruly heroes.
The Audible Original Series is hosted by bestselling authors of The Good Ally, Ted Speaker and Producer Nova Reid.
From London to Leeds to Jamaica, Nova uses powerful storytelling, personal insights and new research to examine the lives of pioneers, journalists and rules breakers.
These are notable figures from the 18th to 20th centuries, which made a significant contribution to civil rights but were myths, unknown or erased from history.
From the legendary warrior nanny nanny who led resistance to Jamaica's British colonial forces, to the healer who dealt with the future king of England, and groundbreaking journalist Barbara Blake Hannah, Nova reveals their extraordinary Lager.
She also explores the revolutionary work of Olive Morris and the influence of the Dome Jokelin Barrow, where Trinidad and Tobago was born.
The cultural influence of poet Louise “Miss Lou” Bennett Covarley, who voiced his Jamaican identity, is also highlighted, as well as the pioneering work of St. Kitts' Yorkshire-based principal, Gertude Paul, who fought for racial equality in education.
Nova Reed said of the series: “When I started writing good ally, I was fascinated by the recurring theme of resistance from Black women I had never learned throughout school, especially Jamaica.
So I wanted to know more about them. I learned why their stories weren't sold. A lineage lost to slavery in West Africa in a Jamaican heritage born in England – my relationship with Britain is complicated – the interruption of slavery means that much of me and much of our shared history have often been intentionally erased.
“It is an honor to unearth not only the legacy of these women, but also their humanity, through their hidden history with Nova Reed, to tell their stories not only about the way they survived, but also to be able to flourish and be here today.”
Nova Reid's Hidden Histories are now available only for Audible.
