“Carefully Considered” is a new podcast series launched to raise awareness of the issues faced by unpaid carers.
There are three types of people out there: unpaid carers, soon-to-be unpaid carers and people who need care – most people in the UK fall into one or more categories.
Estimates vary, but there are currently between six and 10 million unpaid carers in the UK. This number is set to rise significantly over the next few years. More and more people are likely to have to provide unpaid care for their loved ones and, at some point in their working lives, will have to take time off work to do so.
Unpaid carers contribute to the maintenance of our social care system and the National Health Service (NHS), yet they are often neglected and relegated to poverty.
Two unpaid carers, Katie Stiles, a former teacher and founder of the We Care Campaign, and Laura Barnes, a PR executive and blogger, decided to take action to raise awareness of these issues, as well as entertain and inform.
In each episode, Katie and Laura speak to experts to hear their views and explore what can be done to make the change that millions of carers across the UK need.
Katie Stiles said: “As an activist and founder of a grassroots movement supporting unpaid carers and giving their voices a voice, a podcast has been on my to-do list for a while. It's a great medium to generate engaging conversations and raise this issue as a shared challenge for us all.”
Laura Barnes added: “Podcasting is the perfect medium to explain the baffling situation unpaid carers find themselves in.”
“Having previously produced successful tech podcasts, I know how powerful the format can be for sharing compelling stories.
“Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible and for everyone to be able to listen to and enjoy the show and relate to the conversations and topics we discuss with our guests.”
Nathan Anibaba, founder of Bridge Growth agency, commented: “As founders of a podcast agency, we believe the right conversations can change the world. Katie and Laura are looking to do just that and I'm thrilled to help amplify their voices. I've learned so much already and, as a producer, I'm impressed with their natural hosting style.”
Episodes of Care full Considered are available on captivate.fm and Apple.
