Wondery has launched its latest true crime documentary series, “Criminal Attorney,” hosted by award-winning hip-hop personality and journalist Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins.
Each season will feature a story of legal corruption or courtroom scandal, centering on a lawyer or attorney with his or her finger on the scales of justice.
Season 1 charts the rise and fall of ruthless lawyer Paul Bergrin. The series follows bank manager-turned-FBI agent Sean Brokos as he takes on the task of cleaning up the city of Newark.
As she delves deeper into the murky world of extortion, drug dealing and murder, she discovers that one of the key people she is trying to arrest is a criminal lawyer.
Every case he takes on seems to be won, and as rumors begin to spread, it becomes clear that Bergrin himself has crossed the line into criminality.
Dubbed “the craziest, most evil lawyer in the history of New Jersey,” Bergrin was known for representing a variety of famous and notorious clients until his conviction in 2013.
Ranging from celebrities like Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim and rappers from Naughty by Nature Crew to gang leaders and incarcerated soldiers, including Army reservists indicted in Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, these clients trusted Berglin to deny their wrongdoing.
As his loyalty to his clients and his stubborn desire not to lose his cases grew, the lines began to blur and Bergrin found himself closer to crime than any reputable lawyer could ever be.
Criminal Lawyer explores the criminal world of Paul Bergrin and his astonishing fall, asking why he went from upholding the law to breaking it.
“What intrigues me most about the evolution of true crime documentaries are the provocative stories that make us reevaluate the often-blurred lines of what's right and what's wrong, both within and outside the law,” says host Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, and how easily people can justify traversing those moral territories.
“Paul Bergrin and the people who encounter him have to grapple with that dichotomy to different degrees. I'm excited for people to get involved.”
Criminal Attorney is available ad-free on Wondery+ now and will be available on all podcast platforms from September 23rd, with new episodes releasing every Monday.
