Ahead of the general election, we've launched a brand new limited edition miniseries that will welcome guests into the world of infrastructure and politics to give us greater insight into what's going to happen on the 4th of July and, above all, what it means for UK infrastructure.
In our latest episode, our Director of Policy and Communications, Gareth Elliott, speaks to Strategic Infrastructure Adviser, Tom Kelly. Tom discusses the importance of clarity on the investment climate, industry and government collaboration and planning challenges.
Tom has many years of experience in the infrastructure industry, beginning his career with the BBC before moving into government where he served as Government Press Secretary to former Prime Minister Tony Blair for six years. Tom then worked for Network Rail before moving to HS2.
In this episode Gareth and Tom discuss what they think the next Government needs, what the party's approach to infrastructure will be, and what people waiting for him to become or return as Prime Minister think about this.
Focusing on the rhetoric surrounding the election, Tom says:
“What we're faced with is tax increases but in my view that's a secondary issue, because if we're going to invest in public services and deliver growth in the UK which has been lacking for over a decade, we need investment. To get investment we need clarity. We need consistency. We need certainty.”
“For the Labor Party in particular, that means connecting the dots on our aspirations for the national economy and how to deliver them.”
